Abandonware DOS title

Shareware: a business model

Shareware is a type of software distribution model that allows users to try a program before purchasing it. It's a marketing strategy and distribution method that was particularly popular in the early days of personal computing, primarily during the 1980s and 1990s.
Shareware games were released for free with limited functionality (for example: no saving, missing levels, time limit), often via a BBS (Bulletin Board System), a floppy disc or a CD included in a printed magazine or by direct download (when internet was in its infancy). If the user liked the shareware product, they could pay to obtain an upgrade and unlock the full game. When digital distribution started to become popular, shareware games slowly faded into oblivion.

3d-cyber-blaster-03

3D Cyber Blaster

DOS1992remake HomeBrew Software
If Doom and Laser Tag had a baby raised by dial-up modems, it would be 3D Cyber Blaster. Released in 1992, this shooter has you blasting neon enemies in a world that looks like a Tron-themed laser maze. The sound effects are gloriously crunchy, the enemies are dumb as bricks, and the gameplay feels like you're running through a server error. But th...
8088othello-splash

8088 Othello

DOS1985
There’s something oddly poetic about 8088 Othello, a 1985 take on the classic board game that feels like it was programmed by someone who had a personal vendetta against flashy graphics. The visuals are almost nonexistent, the sound is silent protest, and yet - somehow - it works. This is Othello in its purest form: black versus white, brain ...
abuse-05

Abuse

DOSLinuxMac OS1995freeware Crack dot Com
The year is 1995, and Abuse brings us one of the slickest, darkest run-and-gun shooters ever to crawl out of a DOS/Linux/Mac basement. You play a guy in prison for a crime he didn’t commit (sure, pal), armed to the teeth and mowing down mutants like it’s casual Friday. It’s gritty, fast, and has mouse aiming — in 1995! That ...
ackack-attack-03

Ack-Ack Attack!

DOS1995remake PLBM Games
In Ack-Ack Attack! (1995, DOS), you operate an anti-aircraft gun and do your best to shoot down waves of enemy planes with what appears to be a potato cannon. The game is loud, frantic, and wonderfully simple — a throwback to the days when “arcade-style” meant “your wrist will hurt after 15 minutes.” It’s not com...
air-traffic-controller-02

Air Traffic Controller

DOS1985 Cascoly Software
Welcome to the most stressful job in the world - rendered in glorious 1985 DOS graphics! Air Traffic Controller lets you experience the thrill of herding aircraft without the luxury of coffee breaks or radar resolution. It’s tense, it's crude, and it's a miracle anyone survived your first session. You’ll learn that "near miss" is just a...
aldo2-03

Aldo Again

DOS1989remake
Aldo Again (1989) is the platformer that dares to say, “Hey, what if Donkey Kong but with 100% more confusion?” You play as Aldo, a mustachioed man of mystery (and questionable balance) who’s trying to climb platforms, dodge hazards, and maybe figure out why he’s doing any of this. The graphics are primitive, the physics are...
aldosadventure-1

Aldo's Adventure

DOS1987remake
Aldo’s Adventure is what you get when someone squints at Donkey Kong and decides to remake it after four cups of coffee and a long nap. You play Aldo, a brave little guy whose hobbies include climbing platforms, dodging hazards, and falling in love with repetitive music. The levels are simple, the enemies look like they're made of leftover pi...
aldo3-03

Aldo's Assault

DOS1991
Think of Aldo's Assault as what happens when Mario forgets his plumber license and joins a bootleg army. This 1991 DOS gem throws you into a side-scrolling frenzy of ladders, barrels, and the kind of platforming logic that predates physics. Aldo, a man of questionable fashion sense and unclear motives, must survive wave after wave of hazards that s...
aleshar-05

Aleshar World of Ice

DOS1997
Aleshar: World of Ice is what happens when someone says, “Let’s make an RPG, but crank the realism to 11.” Set in a cold, brutal land where your sword arm is only as strong as your calorie intake, this 1997 DOS curiosity turns survival into an art form. Want to swing that axe? Better not be hungry. Want to walk across town? Hope y...
alice-wonderland-if-01

Alice in Wonderland

DOS1989
Step into the rabbit hole - no, really, step carefully, or you’ll glitch right through the floor. Alice in Wonderland (1989, DOS) is a surreal, side-scrolling adventure that loosely follows the Lewis Carroll classic, if Lewis Carroll had a CRT monitor and a questionable understanding of collision detection. You play as Alice, wandering throug...
alien-rampage-05

Alien Rampage

DOS1996
Alien Rampage (1996) is what happens when Duke Nukem gets stranded on a hostile alien planet and decides subtlety is for cowards. It’s a side-scrolling shooter dripping with gore, attitude, and the occasional terrible pun. Everything explodes, everything wants to kill you, and the hero growls like he gargles gravel. It’s dumb, loud, and...
alphaman-02

AlphaMan

DOS1995
Ever wondered what would happen if a roguelike and a B-movie had a radioactive baby? AlphaMan is the answer. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where mutant banana slugs might be your best friend—or your worst enemy—you play a survivor with a bad attitude and worse fashion sense. The goal? Stop the evil Doomsday Bomb. The method? Whatever ...
amazingmaze-splash

Amazing Maze

DOS1983
Don’t be fooled by the name—Amazing Maze is more of a slightly-better-than-average maze. But hey, in 1983, navigating a screen full of walls and hoping you guessed right was enough to set hearts racing. It’s just you, a CPU opponent, and a timer judging your every move. The graphics are simpler than a kindergarten drawing, but the...
ancients1-deathwatch-01

Ancients 1: Deathwatch

DOS1991 Farr-Ware Software
In Ancients 1: Deathwatch, you gather your pixelated party and set off to cleanse a city of evil, or at least try not to get mugged by slimes. It's a dungeon crawler in classic DOS fashion — grid movement, turn-based battles, and interface menus with all the elegance of a fax machine. Released in 1991, it’s as old-school as they come, r...
antattack-splash

Ant Attack!

DOS1994freeware Dataware
Released in 1994 (long after it originally debuted on other platforms), Ant Attack! is what you get when you mix isometric graphics, giant ants, and questionable urban planning. You play a brave soul navigating a crumbling city to rescue someone — while being constantly menaced by mutant ants the size of Volkswagens. It’s surprisingly t...
aquanoid-splash

Aquanoid

DOS1992remake
Aquanoid (1992) takes the classic Breakout formula and throws it underwater, because bricks are apparently much more intimidating when they're wet. You control a paddle, you bounce a ball, you try to pretend you're not just playing a glorified version of Pong with a marine biology twist. Bonus points for the soundtrack, which sounds like a Casio ke...
arcticadventure-splash

Arctic Adventure

DOS1991 Apogee Software
Arctic Adventure is the sequel nobody asked for to Pharaoh's Tomb, except this time you’re freezing your butt off. As Nevada Smith (not a typo, it’s his real name), you platform-hop through icy ruins in search of... something valuable. Probably gold. Or penguins. It’s classic Apogee: blocky graphics, deadly spikes, and more trial-...
armchair-quarterback-01

Armchair Quarterback

DOS1985
Armchair Quarterback lets you live the dream of yelling at your TV — but on your DOS machine, and with even less control. It’s part simulator, part quiz show, and all weird. You make play calls, analyze stats, and pray the dice gods like you more than they did your last fantasy football team. Graphics are minimal, the commentary snarky,...
aspetra-jrpg-02

Aspetra

DOS1996
Welcome to Aspetra, a 1996 DOS game that tried to cram an epic sci-fi RPG into your beige box PC — and mostly succeeded! Think “Star Trek meets budget constraints.” You explore strange new worlds, meet weirdly specific aliens, and solve puzzles that are either insultingly simple or brutally cryptic, no middle ground. The UI is... ...
assaulttrooper-2

Assault Trooper

DOS1997 Webfoot Technologies
In Assault Trooper, you're the lone soldier with enough ammo to make Rambo blush, dropped behind enemy lines to shoot first and ask “was that a civilian?” later. This 1997 top-down shooter screams “keyboard-mashing catharsis,” offering a blend of stealth, strategy, and full-auto chaos. The missions are varied, the enemies pl...
astrofire-3

Astro Fire

DOS1994freewareremake ORT Software
Astro Fire (1994) is the illegitimate love child of Asteroids and a particularly angry fireworks show. You pilot a tiny ship with a death wish through an endless barrage of asteroids, enemies, and power-ups that may or may not be worth the risk. The pace is fast, the soundtrack is intense, and the explosions are satisfying enough to make Michael Ba...
azalta-03

Azalta: Cult of the Raven

DOS1996
Azalta: Cult of the Raven is what happens when a lone developer says, “I can make an RPG better than Ultima!” and sort of does. Released in 1996, this DOS dungeon crawler features deep customization, open-ended quests, and graphics that scream “programmed at 2 a.m.” The story is delightfully dark: evil cults, bird-themed may...
bass-tour-01

Bass Tour

DOS1992
Think of Bass Tour (1992) as the road trip version of virtual fishing. More simulation than arcade, it lets you travel, pick locations, study conditions, and obsess over bait types like you're preparing for a National Geographic special. It’s fishing, but with menus. Lots of menus. Perfect for those who like their relaxation served with a sid...
batalia-splash

Batalia

DOS1986 The Right Brothers
Batalia (1986) is what happens when war games and spreadsheet programs fall in love. This early DOS strategy title throws you into tactical battles with graphics that would struggle to impress a calculator. But don’t be fooled—it’s deeper than it looks. Planning, resource management, and an iron will are essential. It's not pretty...
battlestar-05

Battlestar

Windows 3.x1996freeware
No, not that Battlestar. Battlestar (1996) is more obscure than a reboot that never happened. Set in deep space with a top-down view and UI only a Windows 3.x user could love, it mixes tactical combat and sci-fi storytelling like a B-movie got turned into a spreadsheet. The controls are awkward, the visuals retro even for ‘96, but there&rsquo...
beyond-titanic-01

Beyond the Titanic

DOS1986 Apogee Software
Before Titanic was a movie with a lot of weeping, there was Beyond the Titanic, a text adventure where surviving the iceberg is just the beginning. The game takes the historic disaster and then says, “What if we added a secret underground base and aliens?”—and somehow, it works. With only words and your imagination, it builds a wo...
